Palm Pre In the Wild, YouTube App

Posted by: Christopher Meinck

Tagged in: Palm Pre

Photos of the Palm Pre in the wild have cropped up today on Twitter (via lo_toney) and have since been removed. The photos show the YouTube videos application and composing an email on the Palm Pre. The YouTube videos application looks similar to the same app that appears on Palm's Treo Pro.

Update: It appears these were taken today. A quick check of the most popular YouTube videos shows a similar list as shown on the Pre.

@zeejay's comment: ugh, do you think this means that the Pre miniUSB cable will be white?? Blech.

That's a mighty clean YouTube interface. Makes the YouTube app on my Touch Pro seem downright klunky. Of course, I expect the Pre to make my TP, in general, seem downright klunky.

I'm thinking the pictures might be straight from someone in Palm's R&D Department, since all I see is Apple equipment in the background.

If you didn't know, Palm went on a corporate raiding binge and hired away several of Apple's top designers away to work on the Pre project. Steve Jobs has had a case of the a$$ towards Palm ever since. lol.

Batter life cant be good on it... do you see the battery meter? It seems to have dropped like 10% from pic 1 to pic 2.

Perhaps they use the same format used on the iPhone?

I wasn't aware the iPhone could use YouTube. Guess I should do my research.

The Pre really seems like it will be a great phone as far as hardware/software are concerned. But was about the aesthetics, the picture in that phone looks pretty rough. -How well will the casing hold up?
-Will the screen be scratch resistant?

Ohh and why is nobody asking about battery life??!!! Remember when the iphone was about to drop and everyone talked about the battery life--I have yet to hear anything about it from Palm. And I assume that if it were "Good" Palm would market this is a benefit.

battery life isn't mentioned as much because the battery can be taken out and replaced with another. iphone can't. that's why it was talked about so much with the iphone.

The Pre is using the mobile version of YouTube, which uses the H.264 video codec. It's the same codec that the iPhone uses to watch YouTube videos.

the battery life kicks butt, it looks like a double battery it's big.. and the battery is removable not like the iphone where you have to send it back to apple.

haha...rgding the comment that someone before made about Steve Jobs mad at Palm because they hired away Apple folks...i think the guy has it backwards...Palm used to be the one who had lot of Treo developers who were then hired away by Apple when they started with iPhone...if the reverse hiring is now true, its Sweet Karma...hehe...

i'm going to tell everyone RIGHT NOW...get used to it...get comfortable with it...brace yourself...meditate...pray...the PRE battery life will be HORRIBLE...if you've bought PALM stock anywhere on the way up you need to dump it one week before MAY 16th (may 16th being the early offer to come in the sprint stores for those who joined the "ALERT ME" list...the week before that being hands on press "test-drives" and reviews)...i'm sorry...it's still going to be a groundbreaking phone...it's going to draw & quarter the iphone...won't even be close...from the warm and fuzzy GUI to the productivity...but the battery life is going to be PITIFUL.

@detroitkruk How do you know there will be a May 16th event for those who signed up for the "alert me" email? You're saying press will get the Pre the week prior to May 16th?

I think it's obvious that the battery life isn't going to be superb, no smart phone has great battery life unless it is an inch thick with a huge battery. Until there is a huge leap in battery technology, it's going to remain that way. Most people realize that they are going to have to have to keep extra chargers around to fill up on juice if they are a heavy phone user. It's just common sense...

This in no way reflects poorly on the phone or it's potential sales.. Look at the iphone, it's battery sucks and people love it. As long as people love a phone, they will do what it takes to keep it charged. A small price to pay for a product that makes your life easier..

However, I'm still hoping that initial tests show the Pre has superb battery life with the new chipset being used in this phone... However, if the battery sucks, I'll just keep a charger in my car..

mutli-client or that synergy messaging;d or synergy calendar, etc... better be included at the device as demoed.... i brought it up 'coz in Palm's site it says "...it may need 3rd party application...".... i mean after all that great demo, people have expectations right... and frankly this is the best feature of Pre and would beat any phone... i mean the "card deck" to manage multiple apps and the inobstrusive message alert are great surely improving on what our mobile phones already do, but from "a purely new feature originality" synergy beats them all (at least i don't know if any other device can do synergy)....

I have a Pre, and You Tube has a very hard time loading videos on my phone. It really sucks, actually. When the video plays, it's nice and clear. It's just the file takes a hundred years to load. Like old dial-up.
