Third Party Developer PhoneFusion Offers To Create Visual Voicemail for Palm Pre

Posted by: Christopher Meinck

Tagged in: visual voicemail , Palm Pre

Earlier this week, Palm confirmed (via Twitter) that the Pre would not include Visual Voicemail. For those unfamiliar with Visual Voicemail, this allows you to select and listen to any of your voicemail messages from your phone without having to dial into your wireless carrier. PhoneFusion, makers of Fusion Voicemail Plus, have stepped up (via Twitter) and offered to fill the gap left open by Palm.

Does the Mojo SDK allow for a developer access to create a visual voicemail app? As a potential Palm Pre customer, were you expecting wanting visual voicemail on the Pre? Let us know in the comments and we'll update this article when we get more information on the outcome fo PhoneFusion's offer to Palm.

I would have liked it. Its a real cool feature, but it not going to be a deal breaker for me. Im getting this phone anyway.

When I first saw Visual Voicemail on the Instinct, I thought it was an incredible idea. I don't have the Instinct, so I haven't really had it to love it, I guess. But I do think it would be a great feature to add to the Pre. If they want to fight the iPhone successfully, they could use every piece of ammo they can get.

Yes - definitely need to have VVM on the PalmPre - last thing I want to be doing is wishing some of the capabilities my stupid instinct has - cant wait to smash it when I get my Pre!

YES I was EXPECTING that in the Pre. Getting more and more dissapointed about its release as it gets closer! No time to wait for 3rd party apps to be "built." But I will try it out when it comes and if I do not like then I am throwing in the towel and going to ATT and the new iPhone coming out in July!

Personally, I was expecting it. I would have loved to have it implemented. I am, however, not devasted because usually no one leaves me messages. If they can't immediately reach me, they will hang up and send a Text message. I am, however, p-offed by the fact that we have to agree to the simply everything plan as opposed to an unlimited data plan. That is SOOO ridiculous

I was actually EXPECTING it and was one of the reasons I considered it a true rival to my iPhone. I feel it is something that I will have to have. I hope they come out with it quickly.

I love VVM on my Instinct. I have to agree with Royel, I don't want to have the Pre in hand wishing it had the same feature as the Instinct. The Instinct is crap and if it can have this feature then the Pre should definitely have it. If the Pre doesn't work out for me, I'm jumping ship to AT&T. I've been with sprint for 10 years now and it is getting ridiculous that they don't have a phone that can compete. I'm hoping it will be this phone.

YES i was expecting it - seeing as how the Pre is supposed to compete with the iPhone and even feature phones have it now I thought it was going to be a GIVEN that the Pre would have it. Palms/Sprint's choice to leave it out is like leaving out a web browser. I still can't believe it....I'm very dissappointed

I thought that would become a standard feature in all web phones. I still can't believe the Pre won't allow video recording. That is so basic.

@andrewyb Not that basic. Both the iPhone and iPhone 3G do not offer video recording. Leaks from iPhone OS 3.0 point to the next iPhone offering this capability.

FWIW, I have an iPhone 3G that I use with a BlackBerry plan (I swap sims/phones often). When I use the iPhone, I lose Visual Voicemail. It is a nice feature and one I'd like to have on the Pre.

I'd have to say that I was expecting it. However, since I'm in the middle of my iPhone 3G contract, there will be time before I have to make a decision about upgrading to the newest iPhone model or going to the Pre.

I didn't think it would be possible to develop an app this sophisticated via Mojo. I assumed that the engine generating these texts was running inside Sprint's voicemail datacenter. To develop an app to do this seems like the application would have to download a copy of the voicemail, analyze and transcribe it, pop a notification for you and finally mark the message for deletion on the voicemail system.

Plus, you would want this to run as a background app (rather than keeping it open as a card 24/7 just waiting for a message) which i'm not sure is possible off of Mojo either.

I have a love/hate relationship with VVM on my Instinct. I love the feature, but I hate that it locks the phone during the download. Case-in-point. I let a incoming call roll to VVM because I am on another call. When I hang up, the download of my message begins (since sprint/CDMA does not do simultaneous voice and data). This in effect locks my Instinct until the download finishes.

I am surprised it's not being offered, and while I like my Treo and like Sprint, it's things like a lack of VVM that demonstrate to me why both these companies are currently also-rans.

Right now, I am hopeful that 2Dial will work under classic. 2Dial is one of those wonderful little programs that should have shipped for free with the Treo, and makes voice mail systems so much easier by taking advantage of the touchscreens of the cellphone.

Right now, I have a Google Voice number. I am hopeful that the browser on the pre will be fast enough and powerful enough to run Google Voice or some mobile version of Google Voice since the full up Google Voice requires flash and benefits from a big screen.

I'd like to point out, that if Palm does something with PhoneFusion, they'd better make a deal with sprint. I tried using PhoneFusion on my Windows Mobile device and had to stop. Sprint Charges 20 cents per minute for forwarded calls, and since PhoneFusion works by you forwarding your unanswered calls to their service this can get expensive... I did it for one month, and had a $10 forwarding charge on my bill....

I contacted the maker of the visual voicemail app SimulSays and they indictaed that they were waiting for the pre to release before evaluating and developing an app.

"Hi *****,

Once the pre gets released we will evaluate this but it will take a little while to develop once it comes out. Thank you for writing.

Best,

Thomas "

I've been using Phonefusion on my Sprint Winmo device since Jan, their version is far superior to the Klausner version which Sprint uses on the Instinct. Phonefusion allows you to receive faxes as well. This is great news. It sounds like all the ducks are starting to fall in a row.

At first I did not get charged, then all of a sudden I was hit with forwarding fees. Called Executive Services, they credited my acct for the fees. Then the forwarding fees stopped appearing on my acct, Executive Services did something, I have no idea what.

The key is working with Sprint to understand the VVM interface used by the Instinct. I don't think it would take much, as far as Palm's SDK goes.

Hey there. VVM is really becoming an expected thing. If the call-forwarding fees don't go away, though... well, what's the point?
Lose the call-forwarding fee Sprint!!

Wanting? How about EXPECTING being the right word. The instinct was released about a year ago and it had VVM...now this new phone which is the next best thing and the iphone killer won't have one of the most basic features that was on the ORIGINAL iphone that was released 2 generations ago? Weak....don't get me wrong, im buying this phone but it sucks that i am downgrading from VVM to that other dial-in crap

I am really concerned about this phone being a flop. I have been following it for several months now and it seems like every week or so I find another flaw with the phone. While each flaw is not individually breaking, they are adding up.
Flash support? No clear answer I have seen.
No SD card slot.
No VVM.
No vid recording.

Whats next? Are they including a full keyboard or do I need an app running in the background to emulate it?

I can't believe they aren't putting Visual Voicemail in the phone!? That's very disappointing, I've been waiting for the Pre and getting psyched about it, but it seems alot of the features I've come to expect from my phone, will be lacking and I'm beginning to wonder if it will be worth it... :-/

After purchasing my Instinct I was disappointed many times over the last year over it's lack of flash on the camera, and no zoom either. I really hate to think I might go through another year thinking "man I wish my phone did... " Especially when it's a thing my stupid Instinct is able to do, otherwise though it's looking to be a great phone!

I think what is happening is that everyone was yelling at Palm to release the Palm Pre NOW!! So they are releasing it without a few features being quite ready yet, but I've read that we can expect Flash support, visual voicemail, and video in the near future, either by updates or from 3rd pard Apps. It's a brand new operating system which will need tweaking, but it already looks amazing.

Yes. I actually want the Pre, but won't get it without VVM. I know some will think it silly, as they don't get many voicemails, or are not used to it, but I get enough voicemails that I need to be able to sort through them without all the "Press # to rewind" or whatever. Certainly I hope the app store gets updated, but until there is VVM, I will be sticking with my glitchy instinct for the same reason someone else said above. I'm not willing to get something with the hope that maybe it'll be fixed down the line and then regret it a year later.

The best thing about the Instinct is the VVM... I have come to depend on it! When I'm at work, all calls have to go to voice mail. It is such a major time saver, being able to address the messages that need addressing without having to wade through the useless. Plus, I never can remember which key fastwards, etc... it was so frustrating, and you never know how long someone is going to ramble on and on, and there is no precise control, so trying to find the exact spot where the person let that important tidbit was always a major hassle. I love the time bar in VVM that lets me see where I am in the message and then to be able to go back to that spot. I also liked being able to see the caller id/picture as I'm listening to the voice mail (I'm a very visual person). Plus, lets say you have a few important messages saved, but then get several new messages, you have to wade through those messages to try to find your important message when you need it. Verses VVM you just scroll down the list until you find the number you need and listen to just that message.

Now my husband has never had VVM so he doesn't see the issue I have. Right now I'm eligible for an upgrade July 1st... but am hesitent to upgrade, without VVM being available (I'd feel a little better about it if I knew a solution was in the near future... ie before the school year starts back up as to I'm a teacher, and VVM makes taking care of personal business so much easier and quicker, I can't just pick up my phone when I'm at work, so ALL calls go to VVM). The call forwarding charges scare me, since I'm already paying more than I would like for way too many minutes (went from a 700 min. to the lowest family 1500 min. plan, when we only use maybe 300 min.! So I'm paying for 1200 extra minutes... but that another issue)

For a phone that is supposed to merge everything together with "Synergy", to not have VVM is such a drastic step backwards. Instead they should be premering a new type of voice mail that integrates it into your conversation stream along with your texts, IMs, emails, etc... I want to see that John Doe texted me, then I emailed back and he responded via voice mail. That would truely be synergistic! But for now I just want, no need, my Visual Voice Mail!!! Iphone, Instinct, Verizon all have VVM, why doen't the Pre?

Palm and Sprint get it together, you have the technology/ infrustructure, you proved it with the Instinct, please don't digress. You want to keep your customers, right?

I was definitely expecting it on the Pre. It was almost a deal breaker, luckily for Palm the Instinct's cons didnt outweigh the Pre's pros. A third party app that works correctly without freezing the phone would be great! Ive found myself not checking my voicemails in a timely manner lately.

No VVM on the Palm Pre !!!! this really sucks !!! I'm getting my Instinct back. There's no way I can live without the VVM, Especially that telemarketers and junk calls are leaving me tons VM's these days !!!

PALM & SPRINT !!! Wake up and listen to your "VALUABLE CUSTOMERS"!!!

I suggest that we all hammer them hard till they get this VVM on the PRE in the next OS Update !!!

I have had the Instinct for a year now and am wanting to upgrade to the Palm Pre...but this IS a deal breaker for me. The Pre is amazing, but how can Sprint & Palm put out a cutting edge device and not have cutting edge software inside the device? How can Sprint and Palm compete with Apple and not have the same bells, whistles and gadgets?

If the Palm Pre does not at least have everything that is ALREADY ON my Instinct, then I am not going to get it. If the Pre does not have (by the time I upgrade) Visual Voicemail, Speed Dial, Favorites, and a phone App that is as good, if not better than my Instinct, than I will NOT get the PALM PRE. Simple as that.

I hate Apple and I love Sprint, but the iPhone is far superior to anything Sprint has available, Pre included...if the Pre is gonna step up and have a TOP NOTCH web browser and visual voicemail. Period.

Where oh where is the visual voice-mail feature for the pre? This was in the top 3 incredible reasons for the buying an Instict and you downgrade that feature for the pre. Don't get me wrong, the pre is a great phone, but let's not work backwards now. VVM on the pre would really blow you away from any competition and would make happy for 1000's of future and CURRENT pre owner's. JUST DO IT......
