First Hands-On Review of Palm Pre

BGR has manged to get their hands on a Palm Pre and promise to offer the world's first review later today. The site has put together their initial impressions of the Pre along with a few photos.

The Pre feels really good in your hand in terms of size and shape, but there’s a real plasticky aura about it. Additionally, things aren’t looking good for that QWERTY either. When you try and type on the top row of keys, your finger hits the bottom part of the front piece and on top of that, you often hit multiple keys at the same time while typing. It’s actually really frustrating and doesn’t bode well for such a fantastic social communication/personal/business tool.

The site goes on to say the capactive screen is "damn beautiful" and blends nicely with the casing. We expect their review will go up later today.

Oh noes! How did that sort of design flaw get past prototyping!? :( Hopefully the reviewer has big sausage fingers and this won't be an issue for most users.

As someone who has typed my whole life, I can tell you each keyboard is different and fits each pair of hands differently. So what may be too small or squishy for you could be perfect for me.

Andrea just said is perfectly. Its a personal fit for each one. Also i do not like reviews as it is only a opinion from one to a couple of people. The reviewers are us and thats life. I have never gotten something or not cus of a review.

I have pretty big hands, but I use my thumbnails to type on my Treo. Absolutely never hit the wrong button even at high speed or while walking. I would assume most people use the pads of their thumbs to type, so I recommend trying it with your nails to see if that helps you. That would also completely get rid of the slider top being in the way as well.

Cant wait to read the review.

Doesn't it look dull?

I still want one but, I hope this is just a demo device or something. It looks like those unrevealed cars with the black strips on them.

"Doesn't it look dull?"

It does, but I think it is partly the angle it was shot at, and the light source. If you go to the story on BGR's site, there are more pics and the last one is at a slightly different angle, and it looks glossy.

No worries... I had a chance to use one for about an hour last week at a friend's retail store in Minneapolis, and the keyboard didn't feel much different than my 755p. The keys are definitely more flush (as in they're not raised as much), but I had no problems whatsoever. I agree with the plasticy feeling mentioned above, but it was still very solid in your hand. I still prefer the glass face of the iphone, but i use/will use the same screen protector for both anyway. Overall though, I left the store feeling VERY impressed... =]

Last sentence should read: their not "theire"

Thanks for the post! Photo definitely suffers from bad lighting. Keyboards are tricky and take adjustment. I have a 8830 (world edition) Blackberry and the keyboard's is not perfect. The curve makes a better keyboard but I simply adjusted and don't make mistakes. Qwerty, however, always beats a touchscreen!

While the last pic is a LITTLE shinier, it still looks very dull compared to all the pics that have been floating around since i started following the pre.

Also as for the keyboard, dont worry about the touching the top piece when on the top row. I have a samsung glyde which has a slideout keyboard and used to have the same problem. but u get used to it once u change the angle u type at. As for the keys, u have to raise ur hands and use the tips of ur thumbs instead of the flat part. And while this is doable, i do not like it cause i like to be able to type with one hand, or with flat thumbs cause its lazier and im lazy. I'm hoping its not as bad as this guy said though.

And i am PUMPED for the full video and/or text review that this site is gonna make. I hope its here by tomorrow.

It's extraordinarily similar to my Treo 755p keyboard. If that guy is hitting the phone/slide on the top row, he'd also be hitting the 4 way scroll on the Treo...which is even closer to the R, T, Y, U keys. This is always the bitch about these 'little' keyboards. Are they TOO small, keys too close together? That's why the Blackberry and others tried bigger keys (representing multiple letters) and other gimmicks. To SOME people, the keyboard will suck...others will love it. Just buy the phone that works for you. I love my Treo keyboard and expect this one will be just a nice.

I have used a palm treo for years and have been delighted with the typing on it's keyboard. I cant imagine the Pre isn't them same size so if you are use to it it works great. I also own a Blackberry Storm which i cant stand the typing on it to hard to hit the right keys. Thats why i wont use an Iphone also the ATT service isn't as good as my Verizon service.
