Are Palm Pre Screen Protectors Necessary?

Posted by: Christopher Meinck

The Palm Pre is composed primarily of plastic and according to Geek.com (via GearDiary), this makes the screen more susceptible to scratches.  In our Palm Pre review, we babied the Pre, but will every day usage result in less than desirable results? If so, than perhaps owners should strongly consider grabbing a Palm Pre screen protector, shield or other method to prevent this from happening. The photo below was after only 5 days of usage and apparently happened from placing the Pre in his front pocket. We're not sure if he carries spare change and/or perhaps razor blades it that pocket.

If you're scoring at home, the iPhone's glass screen fares very well against pocket combatants. How is your Palm Pre faring under normal wear and tear? Be careful out there!

I still have the plastic on mine. It's staying there until my shield gets here which is hopefully today. And I also keep it in the pouch that came with it when I throw it in my pocket.

I've been pretty much babying my Pre since I got it Saturday morning, but still have a small scratch deep enough that you can feel and one very light one that you can see only. I've been keeping it in a pocket of my purse that doesn't have anything else in it, so I don't know where the scratches came from - very frustrating! This thing definitely needs a screen protector.

I figured from the begining that this may become an issue so I left the protective cover that comes on the Pre in the box. I just trimmed the tap off at the top and it works fine at no additional cost!!!

So far so good, but I am using my case for this device. I have never used a case before, always threw my fone in my pocket.....my blackberry looks like it was ate my piranhas due to it! So CASE for the PRE (the leather one FYI)

My phone is holding up pretty well. Although I did purchase a leather holster to carry it in. However, I did drip it yesterday on my way to the train. It got a few small scare on the top corners but they've blended well. I'm definitely about to purchase that Rocketfish snap-on case and holster bundle.

Can't say that I've thought about it at all.

I keep my Pre in my pocket and not a scratch. If you walk around with a lot of keys and stuff like that it probably shouldn't even be in your pocket.

I'd imagine you'd get a holster and just call it a day.

Is anyone using the free pouch that came with the pre? I am, and it is sure a pre saver.

I've carried mine in my front pants pocket since the day it came out. No protector or case. Nothing else in my pocket other than the phone. It looks just like brand new. Palm pre or any other phone, you shouldn't be putting other stuff in your pocket with the phone. just common sense wouldn't you think?

I have mine in my front pocket with nothing else in it and have no problems, but all it takes is once ;-) What screen protectors are you guys leaning toward? Have you used any brands in the past that you recommend?

Yeah, I've been babying my Pre until that shipment from zagg arrives (hopefully today). The Pre gets its own pocket, and I still have the plastic film on it.

I've been INCREDIBLY careful with mine, only carrying it pockets with absoluely nothing in them, and mine has 2 small scratches that are visible with the screen on. tI'm trying to decide whether to accept that it's going to get scratched, or get a screen protector and try to prevent any more. Has anyone found a good protector that doesn't look like crap? I hate peeling edges, bubbles and foggy plastic films.

The little pouch that came with the pre protects it well enough. However it was a pain getting a call and having to pull it out of the pouch just to see who it is. Picked up an invisibleshield from zagg, pouch no longer necessary nothing can scratch this thing now! Just attacked it with with a screw driver cant make a scratch in it. I recommend it.

Geeze! I hope thats not your phone... Actually it looks like the demo pre at Best Buy!

I've had my Pre since day 1 (june 6) and it still looks great! Maybe it's just me. I deeply respect anything I pay 200 bucks for.

When I put it in my pocket I make sure that there is nothing else in that pocket. But I ordered my Clear-Coat a few days ago and am expecting it within a week. The bodyguardz that this article has links to should be looked at with caution tho,

Jon compared three of the top screen protectors and the results are pretty interesting.

Does anybody know how easy it is to replace the face of the Palm Pre? I have done this on my BlackBerry 8830 and it takes about 15 minutes and costs about $8 per replacement face... its the OEM face. I got it from some chinese web site.

Well mine slid off a carr seat while I was getting a ride home and fell underneath the seat infront of me. I have many scratches and a lot of them are noticeable with your fingerip. I ordered Displex Display Scratch Remover to see if I can get it removed. Is my only course of action to get a new screen to have to warranty it?

Ever since I got my 1st palm (m130) I've gotten screen protectors for my mobile/PDAs. I just hate the idea of having it look beat up over long term use. Also I don't know if the acids and oils naturally on our skin or even stuff that gets on our skin from stuff we do in every day life will eventually wear the screen in one way or another. I think I'd rather have a screen protector on it than have to replace the face or the pre itself.

That's a little ridiculous really.
If you put your phone in your pocket with change and keys it WILL get damaged.

Mine doesn't even go in a pocket now at all.

I've been wanting to stay away from a screen protector, that little obelisk is just so sexy, but I will before I take damage.

Figured I'd weigh in on this one. I've had smartphones as my last few phones (Mogul, Instinct, Touch Pro, etc, etc) plus I have an iPod classic and iPod Touch... therefore I'm well aware of scratches and how they can mess up a device. I had a Invisible Shield on my last iPod before I bought a new one and it did an awesome job; I also have an Invisible Shield on my camera LCD... my current devices though I don't use one because I think i do a pretty good job of keeping it scratch and smudge free... I have several micro-fiber cloths that I keep on hand to wipe away the fingerprints and smudges and all that, and I use the little slip on case that came packaged with the Pre as well (it does a pretty good job of wiping things down of the surface...

I must add that I ordered the Touchstone with the Pre, and didn't realize that with the Touchstone came an alternate backcover for the Pre that is used so that the magnet can hold the Pre to the Touchstone... this alternate backcover (matte finish I think) is AWESOME... I will never go back to the old cover because it was too plastic-y feeling and I believe would have been much more susceptible to scratches... if you can get your hands on one of these back covers I HIGHLY recommend it... bottom line though, make sure you take care of your device and handle it with care and you should be fine... not a scratch on mine yet...

Whew! All done...

Drez there is no difference with the touch interface while using my zagg invisibleshield. The shield itself is virtually impossible to scratch, but if any damage does come to it they will replace it, believe me when. I tell you that it will laugh at the keys in you pocket, if you drop it you are on your own though.

I hate this pic. Because of this one guy's (or gal's) experience, there are tons of "reviews" now saying how fragile the Pre is. Simply not true. I've had mine for (almost) a week with no cover and absolutely no scratches so far. My iPod Video, on the other hand, looked like someone used sandpaper on it after 3 days.

My 8830 looks like I ran over it.

I'm still waiting on my Zagg cover but i have had ZERO issues with the Pre so far (although I haven't carried it in my pocket without the Pre orange and black cover like I suspect the owner shown above did).

Thanks insanedave (I love typing that, btw :-) that makes me feel better. I'm going to order one today! There was a video somewhere of a guy applying the invisibleshield that was like 9 minutes long and really showed how to do it effectively and easily. I generally don't have scratch issues because I just keep it in my left front pocket with absolutely nothing else in there and I don't have problems, BUT I have a 4 and 8 year old that might grab it destroy on it ;-)

Wow! That's a big "craper" for me. I am a stickler for having my tech stay looking good and feeling like its built out of quality materials. This a show stopper for me but i will wait a little longer and see how the build quality holds up in the long run for other users. I'm deployed anyway and was going to wait until i come home in Dec to buy. That will give me time to see what happens...

Chester09 wrote the other day that he ordered the Clear-Coat screen protector. I was justing wondering if you had a website you ordered from. I googled it and could not find. I am still trying to decide which protector to get. Thanks for all your inputs. Let us know how the shield and others work when you get them.

My brother is waiting to get his from Wrapsol. They make a screen protector for the Palm Pre http://www.wrapsol.com

It is such a pain to get a sweet new device only to scratch it up and have no way to fix the scratch!

I purchased an invisible shield from Zagg. It has a rubbery feel and it is a pain to install. I was never able to get all the bubbles out and after a few hours, it does not look clear and clean. I am ordering a Clear Touch from boxwave. It was the same story with my Instinct. The invisible shield was awfull while the ClearTouch has been crystal clear for 1 year now!

I have used Invisible Shield now for three products and love it. Within 1-2 days about 80% of the bubbles go away. It always seems that there are one or two stubborn ones though that takes a couple of weeks to disappear.
The devices definitely have a rubber touch to them but it’s no big deal. I just assumed that any kind of clear shielding like this would feel that way.

The original plastic stayed on for about 1 week, just long enough for my Zagg shield to come in.

The Zagg was a bit of a pain to put on and have no bubbles (would have paid the $10 the other guy did for a pro to do it if I could), but in the end it went on decent.

Now, no way it's getting scratched. Touchscreen shows no difference from before/after.

Truly the way to go.

Hi all,

I tried the cellet screen protector. I completely love and it is absolutely clear. No bubble and easy to install!

I tried many (on my previous iphone), but this is the best one I have ever used.

But it has a major problem. The screen protector only has two holes. One for the speaker and one for the middle button. Which means the microphone is covered ... Unbelievably true. However I just drilled a hole into it and I am fine. I am sure they will correct this horrible problem soon. Then I will order one more :-)

Dave

I purchased a zagg shield for my pre and put it on myself, it turned out terrible, smudges, air bubbles and creases, I should have had the store install it. Probably have to repurchase one now and have them do it.

I had a Zagg put on at the store. However, my voice sounded muffled and distorted afterwards. I think you have to be careful that the solution doesn't get into the microphone hole. Traded it in for a new one and mic is clear as a bell. I'll be getting one of the other protectors.

I had the Zagg installed at best buy and took it off after a week. I could not stand the rubber feel and the orange peel look. I could not use the pouch that came with the phone as the shield made it too difficult to insert. I carry it in my pocket of my jeans and do not have any problems yet and I carry change but try to isolate my phone. I put a cheep stick-on one on and it has a few bubbles but better than the Zagg sheild.

I've now had two screen protectors installed - first the Zagg, and second the Skinomi, and within a few days removed them both. I didn't like the rubbery texture, the dimpling that others mentioned, and have noticed that touch performance and responsiveness is much improved without the protector. The touchscreen is capacitive touch, which uses your finger as the conductive end of the equation. With the added insulation from the touch element the phone simply will not perform as consistently. I have been very careful with keys, coins, etc and always try to keep the sleeve that came with it on my Pre at all times. Sure, accidents can happen, but I'd rather take my chances than deal with crappy performance on a daily basis.
