Sprint Stores Selling Palm Touchstone Before Pre Launch

The Palm Pre might not be available for purchase for a few days, but that doesn't mean you cannot purchase Pre accessories, at least from some Sprint stores. Forum member Artap99 managed to purchase a Palm Touchstone to go with soon-to-be purchased Palm Pre. His local Sprint Store charged just $49.99, a bargain compared to the rumored $70 price that was floating around the Internet after the customer representative quoted him the incorrect price.

I read somewhere, and I couldn't say where, that they were selling the Touchstone with the attachment for the back of the phone for $70. You would also have the option of buying just the Touchstone for $49.99 and the attachment for $19.99... Maybe I read it wrong. Dunno.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to buy it separately, albeit by a cent?
Combo - $69.99 Separately - $49.99 + $19.99 = $69.98

I am pretty sure that it was supposed to be $70 total. I asked the associate over the phone a few times and he said it was $50. When I got to the store he said it was $50 again. I then asked if that included the back cover. He opened the box and showed me that it did.
Upon ringing me up, he stared at the screen for a while and then talked to someone in the back room. That person typed on the computer, let the associate back on, and that was it.
So I think they gave me the discounted price because he told me it was $50 so many times.

Just called my local store and they said they are holding them until the launch to ensure that everyone that gets a pre can get accessories as well. I like that idea :)

too gimicky if you ask me. Although I think you'll see a lot of different case replacements for the Pre as it begins to roll out. If you can replace the entire back cover than I'm almost sure you can replace the front cover too. A fully customizable outer casing would explain the reviews about a flimsy hardware design.... Maybe Rubenstein was thinking about all the things he forgot to include in the ipod/phone, like totally personalizing it to the customer. Hmmm...

After asking what store Artap99 got his at, I went to the same store shortly after, and my touchstone costed 75$
So yeah, it was a price mistake.

so it seems that the magnet/inductive piece is just an attachment into the inside of a matte cover. how hard do we think it would be to take that out and put it in the back of the shiny cover for those people that cant do without the shine? I have been wondering this for a long time since we found out about the need for a separate cover for the touchstone and i think with these pictures we have just seen how easy it really could be... interesting

what's the name of the actual company that sold it to him? some "sprint stores" are just licensed resellers, i worked at one called iMobile but the sign for the store was a sprint one.
it was a pretty shady job, we took copies of everyones credit cards and ids, and sometimes sold phones for alot more than their msrp.

The Touchstone and cover come in one package box. The retail price is $69.99. Corporate stores will sell it for the same. It comes in a Palm Pre white box.

I bet they dont sell the shiny back with the Touchstone because over time, having the shiny back sliding around on the Touchstone would scratch and that would piss people off too. One vid I saw of the Touchstone shows placing it on the charger in portrait, and then sliding it around to view in landscape.
I like the Touchstone idea, but for the price, I may for now, just charge with the cord. Seems a little unnecesary for the pricing, IMO.

I can confirm today that the sprint associate that sold two touchstone chargers yesterday is in deep shyt. I was told that he was wrong to sell them and they will sell them on Saturday along with every other sprint store. Thanks again for the info artap99.

1) Any warnings on the induction charger about getting credit cards erased if they are too close?
2) Someone measure the parameters of the induction output... is it 60Hz? That would be the easiest, but prolly buzz too much. So then does Palm take the trouble of AC->DC->hifreq AC ? What frequency? (just a few loops of wire to an oscilloscope should give the answer...)
