A few weeks back we reported that longtime Palm Treo user Howard Stern was in the market for a new smartphone. Capitalizing on the opportunity, Palm's VP of Public Relations called the Stern "Wrap Up Show" to recommend the Pre. This is just a continuation of Palm's budget-friendly grassroots marketing efforts of late that included a Pre appearance on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.

Howard Stern, otherwise known as the king of all media, is a longtime Palm Treo user. Howard even remarked to sidekick Artie Lange that he was texting his wife Beth on his Treo. During the wrap up show, a Palm employee called in to recommend the Palm Pre. Our friend Dieter at PreCentral says it was Palm's VP of Public Relations Lynn Fox. Fox is another in a line of former Apple employees now working for Palm.

Apple today announced their fiscal results and the company posted record revenues, the kind of numbers that typically put executive management in a good mood. With the Palm Pre being called the iPhone killer, Apple CEO Tim Cook seemed less than thrilled with the line of questioning regarding competitive products, most notably Palm's Pre.

Palm is attending Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on February 16th through February 18th. At CES, Palm confirmed that a GSM Palm Pre was in the works, so they could be using MWC 2009 as the launch event for a GSM model. Mobile World Congress is the largest event for mobile, so this would be a perfect setting for an announcement. Sprint has an exclusive on the Palm Pre in the US, but that still leaves the rest of the world. Palm has a history of working with Vodafone, making them a likely partner. Palm has set up a password protected site at: https://palmmwc2009.com/ It certainly looks as if they have big plans for MWC 2009.
Of course, some in the US are hoping an unlocked Palm Pre will be announced. Palm currently sells the Treo Pro unlocked in the US and the Pre would be a big seller for the company. Concerns would be the affect on their relationship with Sprint. If Palm does not offer up an unlocked Pre when it releases the GSM model in Europe, expect a slew of shady unlock services looking to fill the void.

Jimmy Fallon, former SNL cast member and Conan O'Brien's late show replacement, took in the events at CES. Apparently, Fallon loves technology and believed that Palm's comeback was real "before the announcement". Fallon admits to knowing little about the stock market, but felt that Palm's hail mary would pay off. As we all know it did for the company and also for Fallon.
Engadget caught up with Jimmy Fallon on the CES event floor and what ensues is as expected, very entertaining. Check out the video. If Fallon's late night gig doesn't work out, perhaps a career on CNBC is in his future.

Sure we are excited about the Palm Pre and the revolutionary webOS, but the critics have also spoken. The Consumer Electronics Show features thousands of new products and each year CNET awards the best of the bunch. There are category awards and then there is Best In Show Award. Palm swept the awards, winning Best Cellphone/Smartphone, People's Choice and the coveted Best In Show.
Of course, this is just the beginning, as we suspect more awards are on the way once the Palm Pre hits the streets. As a reminder, the Palm Pre will be available on Sprint Wireless in the first half of 2009. Ed Colligan, CEO of Palm, reminded CES attendees that the company is working hard at getting the Pre released sooner than later.

Officials from Palm have confirmed their intentions to launch an App Store that will include webOS applications. A launch date for the App Store has not been announced, but expect it to make it's debut on or around the launch of the Palm Pre.
Apple has had over 500 million applications downloaded and manufacturers such as Palm are taking note. The key to Apple's App Store is the ease of downloading applications. Rather than a hot link to a webpage, the App Store on the iPhone is a true application that makes downloading and purchasing apps easy. RIM, makers of the BlackBerry, announced their intentions to create a similar App Store.
