According to J.P. Morgan analyst Paul Coster, Sprint has sold 100,000 Palm Pre phones since the launch on June 6th. Coster believes 50,000 phones were sold during the first two days and the company may have sold an additional 50,000 through other channels in the days that followed.

Just days away from the June 6th release and there have been plenty of "in the wild" sightings of Sprint employees using the Palm Pre. For most of us, the Palm Pre phones have been under lock and key until Saturday. Not so for two of our forum members who happened upon a Best Buy employee willing to allow them some hands-on time with the Palm Pre. The phone was not activated, so most of their pre-view was a look at the hardware. While certainly not a substitute for a review, here are their thoughts after their brief encounter with the Palm Pre.

Best Buy's Palm Pre Inventory Leaked

A tipster in our Palm Pre forum provided us with a list of Best Buy stores that will receive Palm Pre demo phones. If you are planning on purchasing from Best Buy, you might want to check to see if the store in your area is on this list. Although our tipster was not able to confirm inventory levels, chances are they might have very limited quantities on hand come June 6th. If they are allocating units, it's a safe bet that demo stores would likely get more units. Our tipster says demo stores were picked based on previous successful phone sales. They limited it to 300 demo stores so that they will have a adequate amount of phones for sales.

Collins Stewart analyst Ashok Kumar today said that Palm and Hong Kong based Foxconn International are having difficulties producting high volumes of the Palm Pre.  Sprint's Dan Hesse confirmed the companies could have difficulty keeping up with demand in the early stages of the products release. "We won't be able to keep up with demand for the device in the early period of time," said Hesse. According to Kumar's source at Foxconn, supply of units at launch will be even below a reduced estimate of 150,000 units.

About two weeks ago, Foxconn was having problems with the flexible printed circuit board for the Pre and having trouble getting adequate yields for the capacitive touch-screen display,” Kumar told me by phone this afternoon.

Best Buy will sell the Palm Pre on June 6th, but they aren't doing much to promote the release. The May 31st Best Buy weekly circular has found its way to the web on Google Docs (Slickdeals via our Palm Pre forum). No where to be found is the Palm Pre. It sounds as if earlier reports of limited stock at Best Buy are ringing true. The advantage of purchasing your Palm Pre from Best Buy is the instant $100 rebate. However, you might want to get there early.

It appears that Best Buy fully intends to price the Palm Pre at $849 if you decide to go without a contract. That pretty much secures that no one will be purchasing a Palm Pre from Best Buy without a 2-year agreement, since you can purchase a Palm Pre off-contract from Sprint for $549.

After weeks of banners that pretty much sealed the deal that Best Buy would be carrying the Palm Pre, the phone itself showed up today on Best Buy. Priced at just $849.99, likely a placeholder, the Palm Pre is listed as "coming soon". As we all know, soon is now June 6th. With news yesterday that Best Buy will offer an instant rebate effectively bringing the out of pocket cost down to $199, let's hope big blue has plenty of Palm Pre phones on hand come June 6th.

Best Buy will offer the Palm Pre staring on June 6th. The good news is that Best Buy will sell the Palm Pre at $199 after an instant rebate. No mail-in rebates will be required, allowing you to leave the electronics giant with a Palm Pre in tow and an extra $100.

Last week, a Palm Pre banner was spotted on Best Buy and the big box electronics giant continues to tease with more Palm Pre graphics. The previously inactive banner now links to a larger Palm Pre graphic that details the list of features available on the Palm Pre.
