According to J.P. Morgan analyst Paul Coster, Sprint has sold 100,000 Palm Pre phones since the launch on June 6th. Coster believes 50,000 phones were sold during the first two days and the company may have sold an additional 50,000 through other channels in the days that followed.

Palm has become the technology feel good story of 2009. Against all odds and prognosticators, their performance at CES 2009 made them the 1980 US Hockey team of technology. Going into the event, there weren't many giving them even a punchers chance. How could an upstart from Philadelphia Sunnyvale take on Apollo Creed Apple. For most handheld junkies, they have a soft spot for Palm, since for many a Palm Treo was their first smartphone. Others considering their first smartphone will likely consider the Pre, given the media's obsession with calling it the "iPhone killer", despite the fact that no phone will actually kill the machine that is Apple. It does present prospective smartphone buyers with a choice and choice is a good thing. As you read this review of the Palm Pre, or any review for that matter, remember that reviews are often based upon previous phones and usage patterns. A great phone for one person, might not be the best option for another. Before the Palm Pre, my primary phones were the iPhone 3G and BlackBerry Bold, so naturally my review is based upon my previous experiences. With a desk drawer filled with smartphones, I’m certainly not your average consumer. I’ve outlined my thoughts on the Palm Pre based upon experience and aim to present it in a format that will help you the reader become more informed, so that it might help you make a purchase decision one way or the other. I’d encourage you to read our Customer Review section, as it's has already become a valuable centralized resource for those looking to get feedback from customers.

Sprint has updated their Palm Pre portal at www.sprint.com/pre and now uses a Flash animation that showcases the features of the Palm Pre. Central to the ad is the multi-tasking component of the Pre, which seems to be the main thrust of their marketing efforts and for now a definite advantage over other smartphones. While there is a bit of a load time, the resulting animation is well done. Not only does it clearly demonstrate the key benefits of the Palm Pre, when combined with the voice overs, the Pre itself demonstrates a bit of personality. "Want to surf the web, I hope you weren't texting". Like the Pre itself, the animated Pre is a quirky, confident little bugger.

Roger McNamee sat down with FOX Business today and talked about the Palm Pre. McNamee did not offer hard sales numbers, but confirmed the Pre sold out in "many, many locations", which echos what we'd been hearing in our forums. McNamee was on point throughout most of the interview, citing the keyboard, multi-tasking among the advantages of the Pre, while refusing to call the Pre an "iPhone killer". Say one thing for McNamee, he's a good interview and certainly does not lack enthusiasm for the Pre. He also offers some interesting uses for the mirror on the back of the Palm Pre.

We are not sure if Sprint representatives will be assisting customers with the initial set-up of the Palm Pre, but rest assured the process is pretty straightforward and takes no more than a few minutes to complete. We've detailed the entire process of getting started with the Palm Pre in the gallery below. Once you completed the activation of the Palm Pre, you'll be greeted with a short tutorial on the basics of using gestures. Swiping from right to left acts as a "back button" and will take you one step backward. I found myself using the display area initially and not the "gesture" area that is just below the screen. Once you complete the short tutorial, the Palm Pre displays a short welcome video that's worth watching. To complete the process, the Pre has to restart. For those wondering about boot times, I've included that in the video as well.

Not sure if this is the real deal, but this might just be the first in line anywhere for the Palm Pre. For those counting, this guy has just a little under five days to go until he's able to actually purchase the Palm Pre. And you thought we were crazy to offer up a Palm Pre Camping Guide.

Sprint today confirmed their exclusive on the Palm Pre runs through 2009. The response was in large part due to quotes from Verizon's Chief Executive Lowell McAdam how exclaimed Verizon would sell the Palm Pre in the next six months, putting a Verizon Palm Pre on shelves in time for the all important 2009 holiday season. According to Sprint, their exclusive runs through 2009.
"We have the Pre through 2009," said spokesman James Fisher.

A tipster in our Palm Pre forum provided us with a list of Best Buy stores that will receive Palm Pre demo phones. If you are planning on purchasing from Best Buy, you might want to check to see if the store in your area is on this list. Although our tipster was not able to confirm inventory levels, chances are they might have very limited quantities on hand come June 6th. If they are allocating units, it's a safe bet that demo stores would likely get more units. Our tipster says demo stores were picked based on previous successful phone sales. They limited it to 300 demo stores so that they will have a adequate amount of phones for sales.
