On of the applications that will be available at launch will be the location based app Where. Where is an app that provides you with information about the people, places and things around you. Local content  includes everything from movies, weather, restaurants, gas prices and more. A quick look at the screenshot shows that Where will even help you locate the all important locations of Starbuck's in your area. It also features a yellow pages search, traffic and access to Yelp!

Just a week, we talked about how Sprint had an great opportunity with SlingPlayer for Palm Pre, given the recent news that Apple had removed 3G capability on SlingPlayer for iPhone at AT&T's behest. The good news comes via a Sprint internal document (via Engadget) that details Showcase Apps that will be available at or near launch. Below is the complete list and included is Sling Media. Oddly enough, the folks at Sling Community haven't gotten wind that a webOS app was in development.

While attempting to find out the official release date for the Palm Pre, TechCrunch came across information regarding a new webOS device they are calling the "Mini-Pre". During our Q&A after Palm's CES event, representatives from Palm did confirm that webOS would show up on new Palm devices. News that a new, smaller webOS device that might hit before the end of 2009 is certainly big news and it's earlier than we expected.

Reports say it could come as early as the Fall. For the past year, there has been a buzz regarding the iPhone nano, but nothing coming from Cupertino suggests this product exists. Palm's "Mini-Pre" could fill that niche and expand the webOS ecosystem.

New screenshots show Palm's new webOS in action courtesy of a developer (via PreThinking) working with Palm's webOS emulator. The screenshots include shots of Calendar setup, Sofware preferences, Email setup, Cards and Google Maps. The interface is nothing short of stunning.

With the announcement of webOS and the Palm Pre, Palm has been able to turn the smartphone market on it’s collective ear. Promised for a Q2 2009 release, the Palm Pre has become the media darling of so many technology bloggers and deservedly so. Last year at this time, Palm CEO Ed Colligan promised that the "first half fiscal 09  to be a turning point in the business". Thanks to strong sales of the Palm Centro, the company continued to stay the course, despite a barrage of criticism pleading with the company to deliver an update to their line of devices powered by the aging Palm OS. Rather than cave to the pressures of online and print media, Palm continued to develop and design a revolutionary OS that would provide the company with a foundation that will allow for a ever-growing product line of webOS enable devices.

Location based applications are some of the more useful apps for GPS enabled smartphones. A recent survey conducted by Skyhook Wireless states that less than 10% of location based app developers are interested in developing for webOS. This could change quickly if Sprint is able to move a significant amount of devices and Palm increases the webOS product line.

The guys from Phonescooper were able to get a hands-on demo of "Classic", the new emulation app that allows you to run Palm OS apps within webOS on the Palm Pre. One of the fears of moving to webOS from a Treo or Centro was that you would have to give up your old apps. This is no longer the case. Still no word on pricing, but Classic will be available before the release of the Palm Pre.
