“Our recent underperformance has been very disappointing, but the potential for Palm remains strong,” said Jon Rubinstein, Palm chairman and chief executive officer. “The work we’re doing to improve sales is having an impact, we’re making great progress on future products, and we’re looking forward to upcoming launches with new carrier partners. Most importantly, we have built a unique and highly differentiated platform in webOS, which will provide us with a considerable - and growing - advantage as we move forward.”

CTIA is scheduled for next week. If a product announcement is imminent, that would be the appropriate venue for an announcement.

Microsoft Borrows Palm’s Advertising for Windows Phone 7 Series

Thursday, March 18th, 2010 by Christopher Meinck

Did you see those great ads pushed out the other day from Palm? It looks like Microsoft, who forgot to borrow copy & paste or multi-tasking, has the same ad team or at least the same great idea. Now it’s time for Palm to creatively borrow a few elements from the Microsoft ad. How about adding a few different demographics and have the people in the ads carrying webOS phones.

Are we off in our assessment or do these commercials look terribly similar?

Analyst Eightball: Palm AT&T Launch Delayed?

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010 by Christopher Meinck

According to Canaccord Adams analyst Peter Misek, Palm’s oft-rumored launch on AT&T is being pushed back from April until June or July. Analysts are often incorrect, but to his credit, Misek was first to provide warnings about weak sales on Verizon. Misek claims his “recently learned” information regarding the launch “is more than just an ordinary delay, as AT&T cited a long list of technical issues” with the phones. The news gets worse as Misek reports AT&T has decreased their initial order size and “decided to sharply reduce its marketing budget for the launch“.

Palm, nor AT&T have indicated a release date for any webOS phones. For all we know, June or July has always been the timeline for release. If so, this timeline falls right in line with what is normally Apple’s yearly update of the iPhone.

App Catalog Success Story

Monday, March 15th, 2010 by Christopher Meinck

Palm has seen a steady increase in the number of applications in the App Catalog. While customers raved about the addition of PDK created 3D games, we haven’t seen much in the way of success stories. Today, the Wall Street Journal brings us news of Self Aware Games, a company that chose webOS development over the iPhone and how it’s paying off for them. Self Aware Games decided to bring Word Ace and Card Ace: Blackjack to webOS first, before creating versions for iPhone and Facebook. The result? The company is bringing in $50,000 a month.

The games themselves are free, but Self Aware Games offers an option to purchase “virtual goods”. These include virtual drinks , chips and other items. The social networking aspect of the game, combined with it’s price of free has had a positive impact on downloads.

The company sites overcrowding and difficulty getting noticed as reasons why they chose webOS development. Colin Liotta, co-founder of Self Aware Games, believes webOS devices have an advantage over the iPhone by offering keyboard-input and multi-tasking.

Palm Introduces Developer Purchase Program

Friday, March 12th, 2010 by Christopher Meinck

Palm has just let us (via Twitter) know that a new Palm Developer Purchase Program is online. If you are a webOS developer or considering it, you can know purchase phones directly from Palm. We won’t lie, the prices are still a bit high even with the 20% discount, but the alternative is a 2 year contract with your favorite wireless provider. The Palm Pre Plus compatible with Verizon Wireless runs $479.99 minus 20% or roughly $384.

Palm T-Mobile Rumors Debunked

Friday, February 26th, 2010 by Christopher Meinck

Last week, there were rumors abound that T-Mobile would get their first Palm device since the Palm Treo 600. No doubt Palm could benefit from adding carriers and AT&T is almost certain to join the fray in the coming months. According to Forbes, Palm is not getting ready to launch a webOS device on T-Mobile.

tmobile_logo_1

According to Macquarie Research analyst Phil Cusick,

“Our checks indicate that Sprint hasn’t seen any pickup since the Verizon launch. We expect AT&T to launch Pre and Pixi in April or May, but with even less marketing support than Verizon, and checks indicate that recent chatter of an impending launch at T-Mobile is not correct.”

At some point, expansion of carriers will only do so much. Palm needs the buzz it had this time last year and a new device might be the only way to get that back.

Palm CEO Rubinstein Sends Letter To Employees

Thursday, February 25th, 2010 by Christopher Meinck

Earlier today, Palm issued a statement revising revenue forecasts for the company due to slow sales of webOS devices.  Palm’s CEO Jon Rubinstein addressed Palm employees by sending out a company wide email. The entire text of which was shared with the Wall St. Journal. It provides more insight into Palm’s earlier statement and the companies plan to reverse their fortunes.

Team,

This morning we announced preliminary results for our 2010 third quarter. Since the quarter has not yet closed, it is too soon to offer exact numbers, but we stated that we expect to report revenues for Q3 between $300 and $320 million. We also announced that we expect our revenue for this fiscal year to fall below the guidance we gave to Wall Street, which ranged from $1.6 to $1.8 billion. As we mentioned in our press release, our softer than expected performance is due to slower than expected customer adoption of our products, which in turn has prompted our U.S. carrier partners to put additional orders on hold for the time being. On a positive note, we expect to exit the quarter with over $500 million in cash on our balance sheet. We’re scheduled to announce our full financial results in March.

I realize this news is difficult to swallow. We made this announcement today to prevent a surprise for Wall Street when we announce quarterly earnings in March. In the meantime, the entire executive team has been working extremely hard to improve product performance, and have implemented a number of initiatives to increase awareness and drive sales.

Dave Whalen and I just returned from a very successful meeting with Verizon Wireless, where they acknowledged that their execution of our launch was below expectations and recommitted to working with us to improve sales. To accelerate sales, we initiated Project JumpStart nearly three weeks ago. Since then, nearly two hundred Palm Brand Ambassadors, supplemented by Palm employees from Sunnyvale, have been training Verizon sales reps across the U.S. on our products. Early results from the stores have already shown improvement on product knowledge and sales week over week. You may have also seen a growing number of Palm ads on billboards, bus shelters, buses, and subway stations—all getting the word out about Palm.

All of these efforts are examples of how we are working to accelerate adoption and grow distribution of webOS. In the next few weeks, your management will work with you to make sure your priorities are laser-focused, primarily on helping to increase sales, improve product quality and differentiate the Palm product experience.

Our goals are taking longer than expected to achieve, but I am still confident that our talented team has what it takes to get the job done.

We’ll schedule an all-hands meeting after our earnings announcement in March, and I’ll be happy to answer your questions.

Go team!!!

jon

Considering Palm and Verizon had months to discuss the launch of the Palm Pre Plus and Palm Pixi Plus, one has to wonder why the launch was botched so badly? Both parties appear to be in agreement that the launch was below expectations. It will be interesting to see what steps are taken by Verizon to improve sales. Today’s onslaught of negative news cannot help matters.

Palm developing new webOS Device for release this year

Thursday, February 25th, 2010 by Christopher Meinck

Palm is expected to launch webOS devices on AT&T in the next few months. These phones will likely be variants of the existing models, likely the Palm Pre Plus and Palm Pixi Plus. Now comes word via the Wall St. Journal (subscription required) that “those familiar with Palm’s situation” say that Palm is developing a brand new phone for later this year. This news shouldn’t come as a big surprise, but it’s the first somewhat official confirmation we’ve seen regarding a new webOS device. Given the events of the last 24 hours, this certainly comes as encouraging news.

Now that we sort-of know that a new webOS device awaits. What does the next generation Palm webOS device need to boost sales and remain competitive against Android, iPhone and the coming Windows Series 7 Phones. Let us know in the comments.
