UPDATE: Palm has not halted production. As per Engadget who spoke with Palm representatives, the company suspended production for the Chinese New Year.

There is a report out from OTR Global that three sources have confirmed that Palm has halted production of the Palm Pre, Palm Pre Plus, Palm Pixi and Palm Pixi Plus. According to BGR, one source was quoted as saying, “The decision is very sudden, and Foxconn was told to reduce all February Pre forecast to zero on Wednesday and nobody knows whether shipment will resume in March.

Sources: 3 sources Taiwan handset component supply chain (all repeats)
Key sources in the Taiwan handset supply chain said Palm Inc. has ordered assembler Foxconn International Holdings Co. The source said the CDMA2000 Pre to Sprint and the CDMA2000 Pre+ to Verizon were affected.
Pixi Production Suspended Too?
One source said Palm also told Compal Communications Inc. to suspend shipment of the Pixi and Pixi+ in February, while another source said that production is still going ahead with the Pixi+ to Verizon, but actual delivery in February will amount to less than 5,000 units.

Honestly, we’re not sure to what to make of the news. Even if new hardware were on the way, this seems pretty drastic. There were be plenty of speculation, but we’ll do our best to provide any news as it becomes available.

Palm Introduces Palm Pre Plus and Palm Pixi Plus, Coming To Verizon Wireless

Thursday, January 7th, 2010 by Christopher Meinck

Palm today introduced two updated devices to the family of webOS phones. The Palm Pre Plus and the Palm Pixi Plus will be available on Verizon Wireless starting on January 25th. Pricing for both phones is not available as of yet. Both Verizon Palm phones will offer a unique Mobile Hotspot application that will allow 5 devices to connect to the Internet using your webOS phone. The HotSpot application will be exclusively for Verizon versions of the Palm Pre and Palm Pixi and will be available in the App Catalog. No word on whether this will require an additional plan, though we are betting it will.

Other notable changes include the bump up from 8GB to 16GB on the Palm Pre Plus and the addition of WiFi to the Palm Pixi Plus.

Palm Releases webOS 1.3.5.1 Update

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010 by Christopher Meinck

Palm has released webOS update 1.3.5.1, a minor update that is available via ‘Updates’ on the Palm Pixi and Palm Pre. The release notes from Palm indicate webOS update 1.3.5.1 fixes an issue affecting the Calendar app with an Exchange account.

This release fixes an issue in which the Calendar app displayed no events for any account after a user synchronized Calendar with an Exchange account. With this update, Calendar events now appear correctly after an Exchange sync.

Pink Palm Pixi Coming To Sprint?

Monday, January 4th, 2010 by Christopher Meinck

A Pink Palm Pixi is showing up in Sprint’s inventory system, barely a few months after the initial release. Valentine’s Day is around the corner, so this might be a paint job aimed at boosting sales in mid-February. Forget about that box of candy or flowers, if your better-half has her heart set on a Pink Palm Pixi.

Nothing official yet from Palm, but we certainly expect a bevy of announcements starting Thursday at CES. We’ll be covering the event live, so be sure to check back often.

OpenGL Files Found, webOS 2.0 On Horizon?

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009 by Christopher Meinck

According to webOSInternals (via Twitter), there are a few files in webOS 1.3.5 that indicate possible support for OpenGL. What’s this mean? Support for OpenGL would pave the way for rich, graphic rich 3D games and apps. If you listen closely, webOS developers are craving GPU support and apparently this might be in the cards (pun intended).

shake-bake-palm-pre

This would certainly usher in dramatic changes for webOS and worthy of bump in the OS identifier to 2.0.  More importantly, this would allow for more robust apps and a snappier user experience. While we certainly applaud Palm for the regular influx of bug fixes and improvements, support for OpenGL could change the entire webOS experience for the better.

Is it too soon to ask for webOS 2.0? CES is next week and we’ll be providing live coverage. Can Palm deliver two years in a row?

Palm Releases webOS 1.3.5

Monday, December 28th, 2009 by Christopher Meinck

Palm has released webOS 1.3.5 for the Palm Pixi and Palm Pre. The following is a complete changelog including feature changes to existing applications. webOS 1.3.5 is available OTA (over the air) via Updates.

App Catalog

  • App Catalog significantly improves the application download experience.
  • A user can now download multiple applications simultaneously.
  • Downloads continue in the background if the user moves away from the download screen.
  • A user can manually pause, resume, and cancel downloads.
  • A user can also download all available updates for the user’s downloaded applications with a single tap.
  • App Catalog automatically resumes downloads in cases where a download was paused because it was interrupted—for example, if a user moves out of network coverage and then moves back into coverage.
  • Users can now take advantage of the full storage capacity of the phone for downloading applications. This gives the user more control over how to allocate the phone’s storage space across applications, music, photos, and other media. Downloaded applications are now stored on the phone’s USB drive.
  • App Catalog lists search results based on an improved search algorithm.
  • Locations from which users can purchase paid apps from App Catalog now include U.S. territories.

Calendar

  • In Day view, switching between days happens more quickly.

Date & Time

  • When the user has network time zone enabled, a city and country are no longer displayed.

Device Info

  • A user can perform a full erase by pressing and holding Sym + the orange/Option key + power for 10 seconds.

Email

  • A user can now edit forwarded text for all email account types.
  • When the user sets up more than one Yahoo! email account, the account names displayed in Account List view include the associated email address so that the user can distinguish them.
  • If an account mailbox is too full to send messages, after the user frees up space in the mailbox on the server, the user can send the messages successfully.
  • The default email signature no longer includes the macron over the “e” in “Pre,” so that the product name shows correctly on a recipient’s phone.

Messaging

  • If a user deletes a conversation with a contact, new conversations with that contact are now correctly displayed in Conversations view.

Screen & Lock

  • When the screen is locked, the time displays in a new font.

Sprint Navigation

  • A user can launch Sprint Navigation from an address in an open contact entry in Contacts.

System

  • Users can now take advantage of the full storage capacity of the phone for downloading applications. This gives the user more control over how to allocate the phone’s storage space across applications, music, photos, and other media. Downloaded applications are now stored on the phone’s USB drive.
  • This update improves battery life in areas of poor wireless network coverage.
  • If the user is working in an application that supports landscape mode (such as Web or Videos), notifications now appear at the bottom of the landscape screen.
  • After a user signs in to an existing Palm profile, applications the user installed from App Catalog are restored in the background. The user can use other features of the phone while the apps are being restored.
  • Swiping to delete a list item that contains a link no longer causes the link to open in the web browser.

Updates

  • After taking the 1.3.5 update, users can download future updates over a 2G (1xRTT , GPRS , EDGE data connection by opening Updates and tapping Download Now.

Rumor: Verizon Starts Palm webOS Training

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009 by Christopher Meinck

PhoneArena, via PIC, has published a screenshot of what appears to be a training slide for Verizon employees who are learning webOS. Of course, earlier this year the CEO said Verizon would get the Palm Pre and there’s been no shortage of predictions that big red would have a webOS device in 2010. Earlier this week, we saw an FCC filing for a WiFi capable Palm Pixi. The training allegedly started yesterday and runs through January 4th, 2010. Palm’s CES event takes place on January 7th and seems all but guaranteed that we’ll see a carrier announcement. Will it be the Palm Pre, the Palm Pixi or both? Maybe it’s an entirely new device? It’s likely we’ll find out on January 7th, if not before then.

Analyst Eightball: New Palm Products Due Late Next Year

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009 by Christopher Meinck

Tim over at EverythingiCafe has created Analyst Eightball, a feature we’re borrowing for EverythingPre. From time to time, we’ll look at what anlaysts are saying about Palm and bring it to you, our readers. Given their predictions in the past, some of it might happen, some might not. Later today, Palm will announce their financial results and as you’d suspect, analyst are making predictions about the results and possible new devices for Palm.

8ball

Based upon channel checks, Piper Jaffray analysts believe Palm sold at least 600k webOS devices (Palm Pre and Palm Pixi) in the quarter. Palm has yet to disclose the number of webOS devices sold, but we are hoping to get actual numbers from the company later today. Piper Jaffray analysts expect Verizon to launch webOS devices in February, with a second large North American carrier to also deliver Palm phones in the first half of 2010. AT&T? It’s not clear if we’ll see the Palm Pre, Palm Pixi or both. They view the Palm Pixi as the driver and the key to ramping up volume of webOS devices. Clearly, at the price point of the Pixi, this makes perfect sense. With the Verizon Palm Pixi sporting WiFi, one has to wonder if big red will ship both webOS devices. The lines of differentiation between the two products is starting to blur.

New devices are expected in the second half of 2010. With CES 2010 starting on January 7th, will Palm use the big stage to make yet another big announcement?
