People are always going to want the latest and greatist. The OS will ALWAYS (IMHO) need to keep up with the hardware in order to survive. Having an Open OS across many CPU/GPU platforms is the ONLY way to go if you plan to survive. Even more so as the mobile device looks to replace the desktop pc.
I am not sure how you can say Apple's Smartphone business model is a model of failure, they have the largest share of the market that any one phone has. I will admit that Palm cannot do the exact same thing Apple did and survive but the middle of the road approach can work well. Keep in mind that the Pre and Pixi will be launching on AT&T and Verizon in Q1 2010. Even though Android will be across all the major carriers the actual phones will not be. If I was buying a phone I sure as heck would want one that wont be killed off for the next model with the same OS...
