Did not and do not use hotmail and it still sucked. hot as hell and drained to zero in 2.5 hrs of standby. Palm technical support was convinced I had a faulty device (so why did they ship it?) and so i returned it. I won't be back for a good long while until this is much much better.

Lithium Ion batteries are not that susceptible to memory effect, nor do they need the initial primer charge like in the days of Ni-Cd. The first time you charge them is just the same as any other time, though fully depleting and recharging can sometimes give the device a better gauge of the battery life.

So I don't think you're going to find a correlation between the "initial" charge and the battery life.
I heard that also but I was on another site that also said that batteries take a few charges to fully get to their maximum potential. So even though its not succeptible to the memory theory but there is still something that happens to peoples batteries that makes them start working better. I have heard from a few people that say that once they left their phone on the charger all night long for a few nights after it was almost dead it held a charge better...

Default Trying a new full charge without AIM

I need this to at least be an email device, so I've tried turning off AIM messaging for now, will unscientifically watch how fast it drains now.

I wonder if pidgin would be a lighter-scale IM client for this device? I used that on my Nokia N810 and got pretty reliable battery life on that archetecture, and it handles all the major IM protocols.

Also, off the car charger, I can confirm that it actually seems to lose charge even while on the car charger with the icon showing that it's charging. Consumption due to gps polling satellites/positions?

Will post my impression here, after a day or so.

my battery life has been fine the entire time, before and after the update. Before the update it ran somewhat hot, and after it stays cool. I never had an issue with heat since. I really dont know why everyone is having battery issues and im not....i push the hell outta this phone. i send txts, browse the web, and run pandora all at the same time and the charge only trickles down slowly. i can even throw in the Speed Brain app without issues lol

btw i only sync'd gmail. Left out Facebook and aim. i'm waiting to sync those when an update comes out that lets you delete facebook contacts from your address book without deleted them as friends on my page.

hope that helps

Thanks for sharing this. Yes I updated to 1.02 just after activation, I don't have the heat issue, tho I did notice it when I first got home, before the update, and cooler since.

It's good to hear there are ppl WITHOUT this issue, perhaps it will be the particular manufacturing lot of batteries that shipped with these, and they can be tested or swapped out, if that's the root cause.

We can hope

I just read this in the official user guide.. "Charge your phone whenever you can. Charge it overnight. The battery has a much longer useful life when it is topped off frequently than when it is charged after it is fully drained."

Is this true? I've always heard to opposite.. better to charge fully when close to completely drained (not necessarily dead). I've done this for most of my other chargeable products and have had great success with battery life. Curious if this is something new?

i like mine.. im about to get another pre soon and im going to ask if i can keep my battery, i dont want one like any that you guys have!! lol.

its not great or even "good" but its very acceptable to me.

took it off charger at 6:30 AM.. from 8:30 - 1:00 i listened to pandra via external speakers plugged into the phone, for about 3 hours or more. during that i was doing almost constant texting, and a little bit of web browsing, and just general playing around with it becauase i cant keep my hands off the thing when its sitting there!

i have gps on, yahoo mail automatically receiving, brightness probably 30%.. ringer off. wifi / blue tooth off.

This is definitely true for Li-ion batteries, which is what this phone has. As I've stated in several other threads of the same topic, it's best to top of the charge than drain completely until it shuts off. Periodically (every 30 charge cycles or so) you can drain it to calibrate the battery gauge.

My wife surprised me w/ mine for an early Fathers Day present Saturday night around 8pm.........yes she rocks! By the time I got it, it was dead, would not turn on. She got it from BB in the afternoon. The store turned it on and activated it and I guess left it on and she put it back in the box until I got it. So I plugged in into the wall and let it charge for a couple of hours and I left in plugged in, but I had to turn it on! Played w/ it for a few minutes and left it alone until morning. Sunday I played around w/ it for most of the day installed a couple of apps, a few phone calls, exploring, ect. and left it on all night. Monday I used it little, streamed Pandora for a little while (I really like that app) and I turned it off that night. Turned it back on this morning and made a few phone calls, Pandora, ect.....and around 2pm I was down to 10% battery. So I decided to plug it into my PC for the first time and that is where I am now. I would say initial battery life was excellent, but then again I didn't use it too much. We will see when I have a heavy usage day!

wi/fi = off
bluetooth = off
screen brightness = 30%
gmail = as items arrive, get mail; 1 account
gps = always on
voice network = automatic
data roaming = enabled
TTY/TDD = off
Vibrate = on
Ringtone Vol = highest
System Sounds = on, highest
screen off = 30sec

I just disconnected off usb/pc charge after 3hrs and shows full battery. We will see how long it lasts this time............
