I tend to think the number of apps available on the Android and iPhone platforms is more marketing than anything else. While there certainly are apps we would still like to see on the Pré... it is generally considered that something close to 99% of the apps available for Android and the iPhone are just crap. You can get a thousand different flashlight or lighter simulation apps, etc. Also... when you're looking at close to 100k apps for the iPhone (and even 10k apps for Android)... it makes it nearly impossible to be able to pick out the good ones. It just "looks" good to be able to say you have nearly 100,000 apps. Unfortunately, numbers work. People will see that one platform has more apps than another and see that as a big plus... regardless of the quality of those apps.

To some extent, I agree your post. Quantity doesn't equal quality. I think Palm's App Catalog is suffering from both right now. 300 apps and not one killer app. No native Facebook app, although we'll get one soon when the Pixi releases. The Twitter apps are ok, but not on par with what you can find on the iPhone.

Even at this early stage, I personally think Palm's webOS apps are better than Android apps. I think webOS is also easier to use than Android. I haven't used 2.0, so cannot do a direct comparison with their latest and greatest. I did spend some time over the weekend browsing the Android Market. I think you quantity, quality argument makes sense there for sure. Even at 300, Palm's apps appear to be of a higher quality.

I'd really like to see Palm knock it out of the park with their Facebook app. I saw a brief demo of it a few weeks back. While it's certainly an improvement over Android's Facebook app, it's still not close to what you'll find on the iPhone.

Again, it all depends on the apps that you use each day. Facebook and Twitter are extremely popular services, so I'd say those apps are critical to a user experience...once you get past the base OS. Palm's got a great base OS. Speed it up and offer a few killer apps and they've got a compelling story to tell.

Why do you think? Has Palm changed directions and does not intend to pursue the business market? Or is the WebOS so difficult to make killer apps for, that some of the companies (Documents To Go, etc) do not want to bother until they see the sales of the Pre go thru the ceiling?

We had a conversation about this on a thread I started too. I was wondering why big name app makers are avoiding WebOS since its suppose to be so free to use. Most people think the limitation of the SDK the main problem. Palm needs to release a new SDK with this next WebOS update. I think Palm has the wrong people in charge at this point. I think their marketing plan for the PRe sucks and they have the Pixi coming put and you've seen no ads for it so far. The need a good marketing department to take over.

Pre needs to give users what they want. They CAN NOT afford to not do this the way the iphone can. 4 months out (into a crowded and very competitive field) and I still can't customize this thing. Many would appreciate being able to back up, I mean sync this thing on a desktop without paying extra $$$. That's a simple start, give us what we want.

How about getting in a meeting room with Sprint and getting us visual voicemail? How about a leak that a video recorder is being worked on? How about checking out the numerous patches that a small percentage of Pre users are enjoying and working towards incorporating those changes into webOS?

WebOS appears to be far superior user experience to iPhone & Android (IMHO) excluding how weak or limited the SDK and lack of APIs (I don't really know what I'm talking about but you know what I mean).

Patching up my phone and downloading homebrew apps (e.g. Music Player remix, LED notification enabling, battery percentage!!!) has made my experience much better. If not for this I'd probably just be waiting for a stellar Android phone to come to Sprint (not sure Samsung Moment is it).

For the time being I'm sticking with WebOS but I'm growing impatient. A true flagship Sprint phone that lives up to the hype may just "turn" me ("I never turned you Frank" ). A young operating system IMHO is no excuse for me still not to be able to customize my text alerts and to let there be all these patches that are showing up (not intentionally) Palm IMHO.

When's the next update and what will it include?

btw, I am impatient. If Palm is at all betting on the consumer being patient, they've lost already. I'm still rooting for WebOS though.

They need to put all the basics for phone in place(some are already coded in the phone but not turned on) Missing basic items on the phone is a mistake.

They will have flash 10.1 earlier than some other phones and that combined with hiring Matthew Tippett, who will get the GPU running up to its capabilities will draw some attention. This alone will give the performance of the Pre a boost, not only in speed but also reduce battery consumption. The overall processing speed will increase because the CPU will be freed up and graphics will be even smother than they are because the GPU will be utilized as it is designed to be used. There are many software fixes that can be made that really could put the Pre ahead of the others.

I agree. But even the iPhone didnt updates that quick. So we have no choice but to wait,.
