Backing up apps and data with multigenerations

Now that I hear the Pre will not have an SD slot, I'm curious if the following can be done with the provided over-the-air backup system:

    1. Multi-generational backups of PIM data (calendar, contacts, memos, tasks).

    2. Multi-generational backups of user-installed applications.

Currently, on my Centro, I have Resco BackupPro making backups of the entire device scheduled for every 3 hours during business hours. It keeps the 6 most 3-hour backups on hand. It also makes a daily backup once a night, and it keeps the 7 most recent of those. Finally, it makes a weekly backup once a week, and keeps the 4 most recent of those. It all happens quite rapidly, especially the 3-hour backups, as they only refresh the appropriate backup set with changes.

This way I have many generations of backup sets in case there's a problem in the most recent one. This is, of course, done with an SD card.

Does the over-the-air syncing have a sort of revision history, so I can go back to an earlier backup, say, a few days ago, because there's a problem with the most recently backed up data?

And does the over the air sync software backup user-installed apps?

Great questions. Keep checking here and other sites, but I highly doubt that anyone will know the answers before launch day.

As for speculation, I doubt that generational backup will be offered OTA by Spralm™. This seems like something a pretty limited market/demographic would need. From the leaked manual:

(We'll ignore for now that both of these glossary terms are on page 294, and are, in fact, successive.)

It'll be interesting to see how apps are backed on the phone. Over here we had a meandering, ambling 3-day convo about what we guessed sync and backup would be like, and what we'd like it to be like. Unfortunately we don't know much more now than we did then.

Less than a week to go, and 13.7% of all your questions will be answered.

    Best,
    .

I agree with .plaid, it seems to me the functionality you're looking for will be needed by very few users, and likely won't be provided by the Palm Profile backup. However, I'd imagine there being a decent chance of a third party creating an app and functionality for that.

I shot a link to this thread over to Resco.net support, the makers of Resco Backup. Thought they might consider producing such a backup solution for the Pre.

I think this backup problem I point out here is one that more people would be concerned with than you might think. If critical data is frequently updated on the handheld it's an issue. I schedule and call patients all day with my Centro, so I really need to make sure I have good backups of various timestamps.
