Compass? Someone I know has a new iphone and showed me the compass (magnetometer) application using google street view. This was very impressive. Is it likely that something similar will eventually come to the pre? I could really use a compass application. Thanks.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the compass capability a hardware feature? Meaning, the iPhone has a "digital hardware compass" if you will and the Pre, from what I've heard, does not have it. So, it would be impossible for the Pre to have this functionality.
if you've already got built in GPS Nav via Sprint Navigation, why would want or need a compass? Kind of like wishing for a match when you had a flame thrower in your other hand.
There are a few neat applications (real world scenarios, not programs) that I can think of for a compass, but it's far from a necessity.
While I mostly agree, Telenav has no idea which way you're facing unless you're moving. So sometimes it's initial directions are a little vague.
Agreed, it's not perfect, it would be nice if they showed a compass in the corner just for reference. I haven't needed a compass app in real world though, but i suppose like anthing, more tools can't hurt.
hehe, I agree. That being said, if someone were to somehow devise a real working compass app for the Pre, I'd probably download it...for free.
are we really at the point in cell technology where the much needed but left out thing is a freaking compass? Lame, next..
http://www.viddler.com/explore/engadget/videos/451/ sure...if the pre had this, i am sure you wouldn't use it.
You take 2 steps in one direction and any navigation system will basically know which way you are facing. Convenient? Sure. Necessary? Hardly!
Have any of you tried walking around a strange city with: 1) Google Maps? 2) Sprint Nav? 3) Live Search? It takes more than two steps for the GPS to register which direction your going in end you wind up looking like a fool walking in circles until the GPS "clicks". Been there and done that trying to find my car in D.C. after getting off the Metro. A compass is an addition to the GPS and the iPhone is supposed to use it for a goofey feature. Something about being able to tell what stores are in front of you. Guess that big Starbucks sign ISN'T a dead giveaway after all
no I wouldn't to be honest. It's a gimmick. If I gps something, I get close then use my eyes. Useful...yes, but I would put this under fart app. Not hatin, just statin (IMO) but I bet you wouldn't use this: http://www.apa.org/apf/mind.jpg
I always thought that when you look at a map (particularly a gps map like on our pre) the map always has north facing up. I think If that were the case, I reallly wouldn't need a compass. Plus, my Expedition has a compass. A lot of cars do. I don't need duplicacy. And road signs usually have the direction on it too, you know, like Loop 410 west means you are traveling, well, west....
Gah you guessed the Beta app I applied to make! Joking aside, unless you're in the woods, at night, on a cloudy night, you don't need a compass. Even in this scenario, it is possible to know which way north is in most of the conditions you'd find yourself in (northern moss sometimes, weather patterns, ask the guy who's not an idiot and brought a compass that runs without draining batteries you should save for calling for help should things go wrong, etc.) Why do I get the feeling this was a troll thread to begin with...
IMO, if you need a compass to get around a city where there is street names in every corner, you should probably not go out by yourself anytime.
