Does the Pre have a memory card? does this palm pre use a memory card? i want to get this phone; however, i feel that i do much better when i have a phone w/ memory card slots. i thank you in advance,
Define "do much better". Its built-in memory is very easily accessed. You can use your pre as an expensive 8-gig thumb drive.
Heh, I agree. I have a 120 gig hard drive on my main PC at the house...of which I'm using 5 gigs.. But I'm also a firm beliver in removing software I don't use. My wife has an 80 gig hard drive..with about 70 gigs used.. and about 1 gig of that she actually knows what it is... sigh...
I agree however I wish Palm would have at least attempted to compete with 1st iPhone by offer 16G on board memory. 8gb is nice plenty for most users but for a webos device that is menat to be a media player video player, and multiple syncing having at least 16gb would be nice How can they release a device to compete with the iPhone w/out matching iphones Mem capacity!!!
Agreed. I have 400gb of music on my PC. Music alone. When all of these apps come along that people want and expansions to the OS...and they're saving pics...and they want video... It will take up room. If I had 64gb...I'd use 64gb. I am a bit of a power user though.
Out of the ~7(ish)GB of actual storage we have available on this device, I'm only using about 2GB total. Even with with video recording and new apps I doubt I'd use more than 2 more. Right now I have about 200 pics, 4 movies, 20 ring tones and about 150 songs.
This is a very applish thing for Pal to do. Including an SD slot would have cost them five bucks BUT that would mean less opportunity to sell "upgrades."
Everyone's different. The option would be nice, like with batteries, where people like me could pay extra to do it themselves, but entry is low. A memory card would allow that. How big are the movie files? Do you compress them down quite a bit. Most AVI files for movies are compressed and often chopped down to hit the allusive 700mb mark. MPEG4 or other files, even WMA end being larger. 700mb is so it can fit on a CD. I might be able to put a few full length movies...2 maybe along with some basics unless there's a good compression program I am not using. I don't do cell phone movies usually (this is the first phone I've had that could really do it). My PSP I did full movies, uncompressed (further past their compression on torrents).
I have 341 songs 1000 plus pics, and I added about 11 apps. I've only used 3.7 gigs...I don't mind the memory its working out well without having a mem card for me
Is it fair that some may want more storage and the option, even for those that don't want it would make the phone more competitive with the iPhone and more alluring to those that do? I feel defensive about any level of criticism of the Pre. Sometimes, I am waiting for, "I have 7000 songs, 6 movies, 4000 pictures, 62 apps, and I still have 6gb left..." It's like a competition. 8gb may far exceed most non-smartphone users needs, but in a media hungry world...many want more. And being competitive with the iPhone is important. Many people may have made a sole decision on storage. Many reviews stated, you get double the storage for half the price...and that was the tipping point. And people expect with each generation of ipod or iphone that the storage double (this option it had a quadruple option) and why not... The thing is Apple makes money of whats getting stored...music, videos, apps, games. A card slot would've allowed costs to relatively be the same, but there be options for one model. If I wanted, I could do that...if you want the on board 8, you're good. In the future things may change over the next year for some as apps pour in...including games. Maybe amazon will have movies. I like 320k songs. To each his own. It'd be nice if it was acknowledge that there's merit to the memory slot...to owners, potential buyers, reviewers, etc.
A microSD slot would have been a very logical thing to include. It's one of my few gripes about the Pre.
Agreed chemical. Joek. I have contributed here. I love the Pre and am typing this on it now. But I most certainly would have loved this. Tech reviewers even before the pr was released that were praising after CES were baffled by this exclusion...especially when you have a bragging point of a replaceable battery. It would not been less memory than the iPhone but the option for as much or more with less restriction. I am not buying a blackberry. Web OS is the big sell...the pre is good. Web OS is incredible. And I am not a blind fanboy of anything and I don't hate the iPhone. I carefully considered both. Sprints cost was the tipping point. I have had the oreo effect and do wish for a few more things...but I am a pre owner. And it seems like anything said other than ,"the pre rocks!!!!!" gets shot down. That's not fair or helpful. You're a great contributor but I like to think myself and others have value.
I am coming from a blackberry myself, and i had 8gb memory card, and with RIM you cant install APPS on the card due to security issues, so basically you used the card for photos, music and other files BUT NO APPS. I had 500-600 songs and about 20-30 ringtones, 10-photos and used up only about 1.5-1.8gb on the card. Yes i agree it would be nice to have a memory but they are follow the APPLE way, let me give you example why card is a issue with Pre: This already happened to one of our members here, his Pre got stolen, now he can do a remote wipe of the Pre and all his files, but if he had card and had important files on there he would not be able to wipe the card and the person who stole his Pre would have access to these files. So i think for this reason and many more Pre decided to do with card and they figured that 8gb would be enough for people, the Apps on the pre dont take up lot of space and how many songs can you fit on a 8gb Pre? I have a 1,600+ songs on my hard drive and it takes up 7+gb, I think it was a security issues more then anything else.
Good point and one I hadn't considered. But could all personal info go to the hard drive and all media go to the card...lie a partition? That wouls seem logical to me.
