    G4 network?

I just saw a TV commercial for Sprint's new G4 network. I've tried doing some searches to no avail. Does anyone have any additional info?

G4 is what they're calling their hand in WiMAX

I thought WiMAX technology was limited in that it didn't support handoffs between towers, so it was useful for things like surfing on a laptop or wireless high speed modem but not for potentially moving connections like phones.

Sprint saying they have a G4 "network" is pure BS. They've launched WiMax in just Baltimore and Portland this past year.

They had almost a two-year lead on Verizon and it's LTE G4 network technology but is quickly squandering it.

I've seen the test reviews of WiMax and the performance is incredible if you can get it. But you're going to have to pay a month-to-month ala carte subscription at first, from what I've read, and the signal quickly falls off if you wander too far from the proprietary towers.

It's just like the early days of cellular towers, all over again. Hopefully Sprint won't screw this up because Sprint has the best data plan prices out there.

one question, what do you guys think of the next gen network standard in terms of global coverage? LTE or WiMax???

a CDMA device is useless in Europe, and that's a deal breaker for me.

I've read analysts' comparisons and they say they're theoretically using the same broadcast technology at their core. This would mean they could allow competitor's phones on their respective 4G networks.

AT&T has hinted at embracing LTE. That says a lot since AT&T is the largest provider in the world. Still, LTE is still at least a year away from a widescale launch in the states. I'm hoping WiMax gets a better footing here in the states by that time.

I hate AT&T and Verizon. They're both what I personally consider undesirable corporations. They'll sell you the moon and then charge you out the ying-yang to get there.

You're right that both WiMAX and LTE are inherently the same, but I'm pretty sure that China Mobile is the biggest provider (in terms of subscribers), followed by Vodaphone.

Anyway I can't wait to see the new network. I'm getting jealous of Japan's network.
