I Don't Like Being Screwed Over.. Neither Will You I Suspect.

    So..*

I've been busy tinkering with my new R/C helicopter and learning how to fly it which has been taking a lot of time.

About 3 weeks ago my Pre started having garbled static in place of the other person's voice. They could still hear me fine.
I learned that if I opened and closed the slider a couple times, and learned since then if I just wiggled it, I could now hear them.

Strictly hardware problem. Restoring and doctoring did nothing.

Yesterday upon my opening and closing the screen went splotchy so now it's time to make the horrid trip to Sprint I was trying to avoid.
After two hours I was told that it has "impact damage". There's a small less than ΒΌ" crack on the top right.
Considering the phone has only been dropped twice how can I have 3 impacts?
The greeter couldn't even find the crack and volunteered to get the manager.
After talking to the manager I find she was the one who made the decision it was impact damage.

    And that's that.

*As much as I like WebOS I will be getting rid of the Pre and possibly Sprint.
If a small phantom crack, that I'm sure would not be there on any phone other than the Pre from a waist high drop, voids the warranty than there's no point having it.
There's no real reason to be upset with Sprint besides IMO the store took the easy way out of replacing the phone.

Now to make things more interesting after having nothing to lose, being thoroughly disgusted and stopping by my job to look for a package of helicopter parts, I cleaned off the phone with electronics cleaner.
I could be wrong but I'm pretty certain the cleaner could not have caused this but made them more apparent.

Looks like this ****er got hit by an IED!
Be prepared to have your friendly local store refer you to Assurion for any reason since they can easily claim "impact damage".

The search for 4 new phones and plans is starting.

    Sidebar:
Spraying the phone actually had a calming effect.
I initially thought "Wow! Maybe the phone really did take more damage than I thought".
That would be correct it. Apparently it did and I may file an Assurion claim just to be able to sell the phone but the fact remains It's had two light drops.
Another phone would have the corner scratched but not have enough damage to be referred to insurance.
And to stop the "Oh you want to fraud Sprint" comments. The initial problem started
before the phone was dropped. I dropped it opening and closing it to hear the call. Guess I should've taken it in the moment it started ):

shouldn't they replace it with impact damage? Isn't that what insurance is for?

    Impact damage is considered abuse.

Water, Theft, Lose, Abuse goes to Assurion.

I just have to say that is quite the title for this thread. Sorry to hear your issues. Best bet is for you to just file a claim w/ Assurion.

Very odd. I've dropped my phone quite a few times (no case) and i still don't even have a scratch. Are you sure someone didn't take that thing and throw it around a few times? it just doesn't seem right with only a couple of drops. It has too many impact points and you're right, it does look like it was hit by an IED.

Nobody touches my phone or car. Besides the phone is usually next to me, today being the exception. That's kinda my "point". It unbelievable that the phone could have that much damage. If it's that easy to be damaged Sprint will never have to do an in-store replacement.

    Another one bites the dust.

Seems quite a few Pre owners are ditching for another phone.

I'm calming down a bit more although I haven't used my once beloved Pre all day.
The Pre is the best phone I've had to date. Looked at the Hero and Moment while waiting for the manager. :ack: Neither will fit and I don't care if Verizon gave away free phones I would switch to them. I came close to walking in and looking at the Droid but the plans suck compared to Sprint.
I'm really stuck. I like the Sprint prices, I like WebOS but again as long as the phone takes such easy damage it's a cluster **** waiting to happen.

I guess I'll pay the insurance money and just wait everything out.

The whole whole thing sticks. That $100 will cut into the heli money I already had allocated. And teh Pixi I was gonna pick up on the 1st really won't be happening.
If I had gone with the Best Buy insurance I'd be covered.
    The whole thing just sticks.

Reminiscing, I noticed that my keyboard was bent, it's slightly visible between the "A" and "Orange" keys and pressed it back in place.
I'm starting to wonder if somebody somewhere didn't get to my phone on one of the rare occasions I left it.
But still unless they strapped a firecracker to it...

I'm obviously missing something here. You went to Sprint to exchange it?

The Pre looks like it's been through seven types of hell.

Doesn't make any sense. I dropped my Pre from waist level and the insurance replaced it with no questions. The next afternoon the (new) replacement arrived. I have since started using a protective case. That is the purpose of insurance.

No it doesn't make sense. Insurance WILL cover it. I do not believe the cause of the gargled sound was the caused by the drop since it had not been dropped at that point.
The screen splocthed after opening and closing. Don't know the cause of that failure.

I was expecting an in-store replacement NOT being referred to insurance.

And for those that missed it in the 1st post. The now visible cracks were NOT apparent UNTIL I sprayed the phone with cleaner.

The phone takes easy damage and gives Sprint an way out of in-store replacements is my point.

OK now I see the problem: the insurance works the way it is set up to work. A person cannot go into a Sprint store and insist that the store give them a new phone. It is handled thru the insurance (Asurion) and their way of doing business is clearly laid out.

Palm is kind of ***** us in there own way, by the lack of updates and lack of fixes, speed of the webOS UI should be addressed ASAP.

The term used in this post topic and subsequent posts has been removed /edited. Let's be a bit more sensitive when using certain terminology.

Now, as to the post, that's a poor job by Insurion. Why I'm paying for insurance, if it won't protect me from the accidental drop?

if it were me I'd just file a claim and say I ran it over by accident. It fell out of its case while I was getting in the car or something. Tell them if they want it you can send it to them, but can't
guarantee all the pieces are accounted for. Lol. I think they have to cover it if its broken by accident, or else why pay the insurance. If worse comes to worse and Asurion won't cover it and Sprint won't replace it, call the Retentions Department and bitch at them.

It's funny that people don't understand what the TC was talking about.

He initially went in to claim the hardware was defective(the speaker was broken). The Sprint store said, "Hey you dropped this thing. There's a crack." The TC was like, "WTF I only dropped it twice from waist high. I expect better durability from Palm. I got screwed."

He already knows the insurance would cover it but probably doesn't want to go through the hassle.

Hope you get your problem fixed... All of these stories are making me rethink what phone I will be getting on December 1st....
