    Pre turning off by itself?

After opening the slider for texting or making a phone call and closing the slider my Pre is completely powering down. Is this happening to anybody else?

Looks like I may be using my Best Buy warranty to replace it already....:foot:

you have 30 days to return it, without using your warranty.

But Yes, My Pre is doing that as well, and it's ticking me off. It just turns itself off randomly whenever it wants. Not while I am doing something though. But shortly after I use it doing anything, it might turn itself off.

That happened to me too usually after closing the slider. I started suspecting the motion was causing the battery to become dislodged. But the solution posted above is fantastic! I inserted a sliver of cardstock as shown on the website. Let's see if this will work. Thanks Catallah!

I've placed cardstock in mineas well and it has helped but I'm still having issues with it shutting off! I think gonna go ahead and take it back to see what kind of fix they may ir may not have for it......man I love the phone but this little issue sucks!

I'm sorry to hear that :frown:. I haven't had any problems since I did that trick (cross fingers!). I love my Pre as well - even though it takes forever to power up. Hope your replacement will work out.

This started happening to me. I tried the solution of putting the paper up top, and it just made a bad problem worse. So I exchanged the battery for one that fit in much more snug.
Problem came back 1 day later.

I should have my replacement Pre today. I recommend all of you exchange it as well. No reason to have a bad phone after 2 weeks.

Mine has a mind of its own and powers off when it wants to. Sprint tech support said to go to service center. I just updated to webOS 1.0.3 to see if it helps

yeah.. my pre likes to turn off when its in my pocket. At first i thought i was pressing the power button.. but my pants pockets are pretty baggy and roomy.. i wonder if the batter is being shook loose. I'm calling in for a replacement today.

Mine would power off in my pocket or just laying on my desk. No consistency.

Mine was turning off as well when I would slide it closed, I was told it had something to do with the battery not being held in place correctly so it was basically popping out in a sense and turning off. I went to my local dealer and returned it with no hassle.

    Pre Turning Itself Off

I've had two Pres so far, the original and a replacement. Both turn themselves off. Mostly it's related to the slider, but my first one would shut itself off while sitting on the counter or attached to the charger somewhere. The Sprint store claimed not to know anything about this issue and encouraged me to try a soft reset. This did not help at all.

    Swapping

Thanks, k4mjk. I think I'll try that one more time. (I've already swapped once). If that doesn't work, I think I'll select a different model phone.

Mine has been doing this too, for some unknown random reason. It's not even always related to the slider either. Thing is just off when I grab it sometimes, so I have to turn it on. Pretty frustrating.

I've been having the same issue. I can have the phone in my desk drawer and it will turn itself off, even after the replacement battery. Just took the phone in and was told the first battery fix did not work. Now they put a piece of foam between the battery and top wall. Doubt it will fix the issue, but will bring it the first time it happens again. At least I know the Palm reps schedule at my local sprint store now.

Since I got my new Pre - for the past 2 weeks- I have not had any issues. Sprint Corp & the Sprint store would not admit knowing anything about the battery issue. I even spoke with their tech at the store. When I went to the store (West Hollywood, CA), which is touted as being a "flagship" store the Palm rep was also there. He knew about the battery issue, the McGyver quick fix about wedging a piece of paper between the battery and the case. I asked if Palm knew why didn't they communicate to Sprint. He said they were working on it. That was 2 weeks ago. Now I understand Sprint is aware of the issue. Obtaining a new phone is the only permanent fix. But it is hit or miss if you get a good Pre.

    Sprint Store's Ignorance of Problem

I finally found a Sprint store in Brighton, Michigan (Grand River in the Kroger/Vg's Mall) that provides good and friendly service. However, even they claim to know nothing about the auto-shut off problem. When I went in with my second malfunctioning Pre, the rep said I was the first person he'd ever heard of having this problem. I showed him this forum and he claimed that he could not acknowledge the posts here because this was not an official Sprint site. LOL. Uh...Okaaaaaayyyyyyy. He did order me a third new Pre. If this one is defective, I think I'm just going to get a different phone. I'm not seeing what's so great about this phone. So far, it's been a real disappointment.
