^ IMHO Palm can't afford to do the things iphone or even android does in the lack of customer satisfaction realm. Pre has lost its buzz and people are jumping ship. Iphone is relatively ubiquitous (sp) in the states at least and android phones are popping up everywhere! I hope that a Verizon release will give Pre a needed push, but Android is working on domination in the interim. I have no choice but to be patient but I do want WebOS to succeed; after all, it is the best OS, but other and the market will not be patient. When comparing two phones, something as simple as no video recorder will make potential buyers choose a different platform, let alone the pre owner who can't even customize her text alerts.
I think we are all a little frustrated with Palm. We shelled out alot of money for the Pre and its a nice phone. But not what it needs to be. I agree, WebOS has alot of potential to be great. But they dont have the people in place at Palm yet to make it what it needs to be. I saw the Pre commercial again last night and I just got made. Its the dumbest f**** commerial ever. Not only does it not make any sense, it doesnt say anything about needing to get it thru Sprint. So suppose someone wanted to get it after seeign that commercial, then they have to hunt down what carrier has it. Not good. I'm not really a Palm fan. But alot of people loved it and wanna see Palm get back on top.
While I agree that the iphone didn't have everything when it came out, the difference was, the iphone was blazing the trail with it's uniqueness - so people expected upgrades to come and although many were not so patient - the userbase was willing to be because that phone was revolutionary. Palm, along with many of the other phones, are not blazing the trail - but rather playing "catch-up", despite the fact they have some nice features. Everyone is trying to "be like" the iPhone. Unfortunately Palm cannot afford to play this "catch-up" game for much longer, especially after releasing a phone that was sub-par with expectations (again, yes the Pre has some features that the iphone does not, but many items missing from the Pre appear to be floating to the surface). Since they don't have much more time to bring in some real $$, they need to get it right and as I mentioned earlier, surpass expectations - even other phones. If by the first quarter of 2010, Palm doesn't release a phone with more horsepower and/or speed than the iphone, they'll just be another RIM device. Might make a few sales, but ultimately they're going to go under. I hate to say this - I really do like Palm and I wish they had it on Verizon so I could've enjoyed this phone for at least a year, but the future for Palm is looking sort of bleak. There have been very little to no official announcements, from Palm, regarding anything major coming. I'm hoping that this is part of their strategy so the competition won't include any "new" ideas they may have - if so, kudos to Palm.... but again, if you're gearing up for a major update to the Pre, all I can say (again and again) is it better be ready to make the other major phones look slow and antiquated. They just cannot afford to release a mediocre upgrade next year. As much as I want that phone to succeed, reality is, it may not, if they don't blow it out of the park.
Okay, we have a slider, we have a candybar, now it is time for a 4in touchscreen phone. We need a beast. I am talking about the smartphone power user. A OLED screen for improved battery life and looks, a Snapdragon or Tegra processor, and a 6mp+ camera. Something to really stick it to the iPhone and HTC HD2.
Of course, all of the above IMHO. webOS > Android OS 1.6 (haven't used 2.0) webOS App Catalog Apps (while outnumbered) > Android Market
